Data Management & Sharing

What is data sharing?

Scientific data sharing is the practice of making scientific data available to the broader researcher community and to the public to promote reproducibility, transparency, collaborative science, and effective data reuse.

What is data reuse?

Data reuse allows for investigators to answer other research questions using data collected for a different primary purpose. Data reuse requires careful planning through the data lifecycle, starting from the data generation stage to selecting the right repository to submit the data at the end of the study.

Where can I share my data or biospecimens?

Your data and biospecimens and other experimental materials can be hosted by generalist and specialist repositories.

In general, NIH does not endorse or require sharing in any specific repository and encourages researchers to select the repository that is most appropriate for their data type and discipline.

The DDS Hub features a list of repositories that you can browse through the Data Sources tab. Examples of the data hosted in these repositories can help you identify the right repository for your data.

If you require additional help or your dataset includes multiple datatypes, the DDS Hub team can assist you in identifying the right repository to deposit your data to enable effective and impactful data reuse. Please contact us at ddshub@mail.nih.gov.
